Pueblo

July 9-10, 2005

Mark Van Heukelom taught all of us a lesson on these two warm days at Pueblo.  Mark was gracious enough to share how he pulled it off:

Many years of fishing for Walleye on Pueblo has taught me one thing. Where the Walleye are the larger smallmouth are. During the heat of Summer you need to fish main lake points that have a 10-18 foot deep shelf out from them. This shelf needs to be at least 15 to 20 feet in width, not just a short ledge.

Islands can also be beneficial, but again need to have that steady 10 to 18 foot depth close by for transitioning fish. My theory is that the wider shelves give the crawfish and shad a larger and more consistent platform to feed off of. Less work for them ='s less work for feeding fish.

We found fish on day one off an island and the fish were there all day. Day two was a different story. Slight change in wind direction and few fish were gone. Main lake points on the south side that had that steady shelf out from them turned on.

As most of us did, I used a green tube jig.  We just dropped the tube down and let it sit, then slowly drag it back at a 45 degree angle. The bite was subtle with a slight tap and weight.

We all have our favorite lakes, and Pueblo happens to be one of mine. Confidence in a lake when fishing's slow can make all the difference. Good fishing partners and Luck doesn't hurt either.
