VP Curt Stowers introduced new members John Jackson (relatively new to
bass fishing), Chad Barber (BASS life member), and Bob Smith (transplanted
from Illinois). Also present was the CO. Federation President, Jay McMillan.
C.A.S.T. (Catch A Special Thrill) will be held June 10 at Horsetooth
Reservoir. This is a day of fishing set aside for disabled and disadvantaged
who enjoy some time on the water. Some will fish and others will just want
to boat ride - it's all good. Lunch will follow and each participant
receives an award. Many of the CBF clubs will provide boats and be a guide
for a day. This is as therapeutic for all volunteers as it is for the
participants.
The Ft. Carson Military Kids Fishing Day is June 17th at Pueblo
Reservoir. Many CBF club members and the CO Walleye Association will pool
our resources in providing boats for the kids of deployed moms and dads.
Half the group will tour the fish hatchery while the other half fishes, then
a lunch break and switch groups. Ft. Carson is providing busses, a medical
tent, personnel and lunch for all participants. As of the May 3 meeting, DBM
has committed at least 13 boats and five ground support volunteers.
The Jr. Bassmasters will have a walk around fishing day on May 27 at Swift
Ponds in Ft. Collins (Melody Road exit off I-25 and curl around to the
right, coming back about a mile to the lakes on the east side of the
highway). The April 22 event at Sandy Acres was a great success with
everyone catching some quality bass. Mark Maline passed around photos of the
activity.
May 27 will have an additional activity at Bass Pro Shops - a Casting Kids
event. Alex Farkas, Matt Massey and Don Speas have volunteered their time.
Newsletter editor Don Speas has requested any updates of phone numbers,
address changes, new e-mail address, BASS expiration dates or anything else
be sent to him at
Donspeas@hotmail.com
The club has increased the tournament payout scale. We are now on a sliding
scale depending on the number of participants. 1 to 15 boats will pay the
top four places; 16 to 20 boats will pay five places; 21 to 25 boats will
pay six places. For each additional five boats there will be yet another
payout place. This has been initiated to give more back to the members and
promote more participation.
The year end Mega Bucks tournament site, October 20-22 was voted on. Of the
three final choices Grand Lake, OK received ZERO votes, Alan Henry, TX got
NINE votes and Cedar Bluff, KS got FOURTEEN votes. So Cedar Bluff it is.
Club member, "Mr. Gitzit" Curt Welch gave a presentation on his favorite
subject - fishing with tubes. Curt said he generally uses 6# - 8# line and
an HP hook with his tubes. With the smaller baits he uses spinning rods
in 6' to 6 1/2' lengths. He also prefers lighter colored tubes for
springtime bed fishing so he can see the tube and tell when he's placed it
in the sweet spot of the bed and so he can see it when a bass inhales it
even if there's no sensation of a strike. Curt prefers to Texas rig his
tubes to prevent picking up debris rather than using an open hook.
The Denver Bassmasters logo is available through the BPS embroidery shop
which has our artwork. You can place it on any shirt or jacket of your own
choosing. The cost is $35 for DBM members and includes the back logo and the
words Denver Bassmasters and your name on the front.
DBM members making the CO State team at the Grand Lake, OK qualifier were
Troy Coburn, 2nd place and Curt Stowers (8th) and Lance Tillotson (11th).
Chad Phillips (13th) is the alternate. Congrats!!
Our next meeting, June 7th, will have a new starting time of 7pm.
